Worth knowing
Marks run from 0 to 10 and the names matter: 5 is aprobado, from 7 you are into notable, from 9 sobresaliente, and the rare top distinction is matrícula de honor, which traditionally carries a discount on the following year fees. Below 5 is suspenso, and the verb suspender means to fail an exam, not to suspend a student; aprobar is to pass. La carrera is the degree programme you enrol in, chosen at the start rather than assembled from majors and minors, and since the Bologna reform the first cycle is el grado, which replaced the older licenciatura. El aula is feminine but takes el because of its stressed initial a, so the plural is las aulas. Watch la facultad, which is the faculty building and school, and los apuntes, the handwritten lecture notes students trade before exams.
