Computers and apps

Half of these words look like English but behave differently, and the other half are the ones you need when a device stops working in a Spanish office or shop.

Quick answer

No me carga la aplicación.

The app will not load for me. Spanish makes the device the subject, so the fault happens to you.

Worth knowing

The word for computer splits the Spanish-speaking world in two. Spain says el ordenador, from French, while Latin America says la computadora or, in Chile and parts of the Andes, el computador — all three are correct in their own region. Spelling out an email address needs three symbols Spaniards say aloud constantly: @ is arroba, a dot is punto and a hyphen is guion. Beware of el móvil versus el celular, the same split again. And note the false friend: una aplicación is a piece of software, but a job application is una solicitud, so saying mandé mi aplicación to a recruiter sounds like you emailed them an app.
