Worth knowing
Spanish hiking signs use a colour code that has nothing to do with English grading. A GR route (red and white marks) is a long-distance path of more than fifty kilometres, a PR (yellow and white) is a day walk, and an SL (green and white) is a short local loop; a mark painted as an X means you are going the wrong way. Two words are easy to confuse: el campo is open countryside, while el campamento is a camp, and el bosque is woodland whereas a tropical rainforest is la selva. Beware the false friend la sierra, which is both a saw and a mountain range, hence names like Sierra Nevada. In Latin America you will hear la montaña replaced locally by el cerro for a single hill.
