Worth knowing
English uses "play" for both instruments and sport, Spanish does not: you tocar an instrument and jugar a game, so juego la guitarra is a classic slip. Live music is en directo in Spain and en vivo in most of Latin America. Watch la batería, which means the drum kit, a car battery and a phone battery all at once, and el disco, which is an album but also a nightclub in shortened speech. If you go to a concierto in Spain, expect it to start far later than the ticket says, and note that flamenco has its own words: the singing is el cante, the dance el baile, and the shouts of encouragement from the audience are jaleo, not applause.
