Worth knowing
Two words decide whether a Spanish flat is worth seeing. An piso exterior has windows onto the street, while an piso interior looks onto an inner light well and can be dark and noisy at breakfast time. Floor numbering also trips people up: street level is the planta baja or bajo, so the primera planta is what a British advert would call the first floor above the ground floor, and in older buildings there is sometimes an entresuelo squeezed in between. Finally, do not treat persianas as decoration. Spaniards roll the outside blinds right down in the middle of a summer day to keep the heat out, and a flat without them is noticeably hotter by evening.
