Spanish bank branches keep short hours: most open around half past eight in the morning and close at about two in the afternoon on weekdays, and anything involving cash at the counter often stops even earlier. Turn up at four and you will find the door shut, which is why almost everything is done through the app. Fees matter more than in many countries: withdrawing from another bank’s cajero is routinely charged, so people are loyal to their own network of machines. If you are staying long term you will need a foreigner’s number, the NIE, to open an account, and you will hear the verb domiciliar, which means setting up a bill to be paid automatically from your account.
