Typical mistakes
Yo eligo el rojo.
Yo elijo el rojo.
Before o and a the g is written j: elijo, elija, elijamos.
Ellos elegieron al presidente.
Ellos eligieron al presidente.
The third person of the preterite changes e → i: eligió, eligieron.
Elegí entre los dos platos y elegí el pescado.
Escogí el pescado.
Both work, but escoger is the everyday word for picking one thing off a list; elegir leans formal and is the verb for elections.
