Quick answer
el 3 de mayo de 2026
Cardinal number, de, month in lower case, de, year. No ordinals, no capital letters.
The fixed pattern
el + number + de + month + de + year. Everything is a plain cardinal number.
The first of the month is the one place where el uno and el primero both occur; uno is standard in Spain.
Months and days stay lower case
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| enero, febrero, marzo | January, February, March |
| abril, mayo, junio | April, May, June |
| julio, agosto, septiembre | July, August, September |
| octubre, noviembre, diciembre | October, November, December |
| lunes, martes, miércoles | Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday |
| jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo | Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday |
Days and months are written with a small letter in Spanish, always.
No word for "on"
The article alone does the work of English "on". For a month or a year, use en.
To ask: ¿Qué día es hoy? or ¿A cuántos estamos?
Memory trick
Number, de, month, de, year — and el instead of "on". Never an ordinal and never a capital letter.
