Comparisons

There is no bigger, faster, cheaper in Spanish. Every comparison is built from separate words, which makes the system short to learn.

Quick answer

más … que · tan … como

One pattern for "more than", one for "as as". Spanish never adds an ending like -er to the adjective.

The three patterns

MeaningPattern
more thanmás + adjective + que
less thanmenos + adjective + que
as astan + adjective + como
Madrid es más grande que Sevilla.Madrid is bigger than Seville.
Este hotel es menos caro que el otro. This hotel is less expensive than the other one.
Soy tan alto como mi padre.I am as tall as my father.

Four irregular ones

These replace the más pattern entirely.

AdjectiveComparative
buenomejor
malopeor
grande (age)mayor
pequeño (age)menor
Mi hermana mayor vive en Bilbao. My older sister lives in Bilbao.
Hoy la comida está peor que ayer.Today the food is worse than yesterday.

The superlative

Add the definite article in front of the comparative.

Es el restaurante más barato del barrio. It is the cheapest restaurant in the neighbourhood.
Es la mejor idea.It is the best idea.

After a superlative, "in" is de, not en.

With numbers

Before a number, que becomes de.

Tengo más de veinte libros.I have more than twenty books.
Cuesta menos de diez euros. It costs less than ten euros.

Memory trick

Que compares two things. De comes before a number. Mixing them is the single most audible slip here.

Typical mistakes

Es más grande de mi casa.

Es más grande que mi casa.

Comparing two things takes que. De is only for quantities.

Mi coche es más bueno que el tuyo.

Mi coche es mejor que el tuyo.

Bueno has its own comparative, mejor, and más bueno sounds childish.

Es el más alto en la clase.

Es el más alto de la clase.

After a superlative Spanish uses de where English uses "in".

Check yourself

Hay más ___ cien personas.
